Random question, but does anyone know if Bob Dylan was particularly influenced by William Faulkner? Perhaps it's coincidence or looking too hard/being too familiar with Dylan's work, but when I read Faulkner, sometimes I pick up little phrases that are incidental lyrics in Dylan's work.

This is super, super tiny, but for example there's a line in the second section of The Sound and the Fury that says "went out to the street," which is also in "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream." There's also a line in the third section which says: "Just like a woman." There are more examples I've found, but these are just the two I can provide offhand.

That said, the little phrases and things I pick out are almost always word for word the same, but they also appear to be common phrases or things that don't necessarily mean that he was influenced by Faulkner.

I'm just curious if anyone knows for sure.

I noticed that I couldn't see anyone had posted any vids from the White house celebration of music from the civil rights movement. I love this video so much. (Sorry if you've all seen it but i'm in the UK and so youtube is the only way for me)

These are some favorites:

When the Ship Comes In-- Marcus Carl Franklyn (I'm Not There soundtrack)

Simple Twist of Fate- Concrete Blonde (Concrete Blonde- Still in Hollywood CD)

One More Cup of Coffee- Sertab ( off the Masked and Anonymous soundtrack)

Of course, generally speaking, I love when Willie Nelson and Joan Baez sing Dylan.

How about people out there? Which are some of your favorites?

Subject:Update: Bob Dylan, Joan Baez to Perform at White House
Time:09:11 pm
“Perhaps the pictures in the Times could no longer be put in rhymes,” Joan Baez sang in 1972’s “To Bobby,” a song which not only begs her former musical/romantic partner Bob Dylan to return to writing the kind of civil rights music (or “protest songs”) that once made him the so-called “voice of a generation,” but also guilts him with a form of social responsibility (“Do you hear the voices in the night, Bobby? / They’re crying for you”).

Now forty-seven years after Dylan and Baez sang at the same March on Washington where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech, the pair are performing in the District of Columbia again, not in protest, but for a performance at the White House’s “Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement.”

As previously reported, Dylan, Smokey Robinson, John Mellencamp, Blind Boys of Alabama, and many other artists will take part in the event, which will be broadcast on PBS this Thursday night (Feb 11), but now, as BroadwayWorld reports, Baez has been added to the lineup as well, turning what was already an historical event for Dylan fanatics like myself into a truly remarkable reminder of the history between that legendary rally and the present.

In addition to PBS’ broadcast and President Obama’s opening remarks to be streamed live on Whitehouse.gov, NPR will air a one-hour concert special throughout the rest of the month that will also be made available online.
